Canada Goes Green!!!

Canada's Carbon Tax - Who Pays?

  • Canada's Carbon Tax is presented as a benefit to Canadians. We are told:
    • Our yearly rebate will refund what we pay each year in full.
    • Many will receive back more money than they paid through the carbon tax.
    • Only large (Evil?) "polluters" will pay.
    • Canada's emissions will be substantially reduced.
  • But the truth is far different.
    • Some may receive more rebate than they paid, but they have to wait until the next year after taxes are filed. Those that receive more are the least likely to be able to wait as they are often living paycheck to paycheck.
    • Retail businesses, wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers, transport companies, etc. do not receive a rebate. Carbon taxes become another cost of that has to be passed onto the customer.
  • No commercial enterprise will ever absorb these additional carbon taxes by reducing profit.
    • Carbon Taxes are passed downward through each link in the supply chain.
    • Ultimately the sum of all the carbon taxes passed downward are added to the cost of goods and services to the consumer.

The Economics of Carbon Taxes

The consumer pays both the Visible and the Hidden carbon taxes

The Consumer Ultimately Pays All Carbon Taxes!!

The VISIBLE carbon tax is what the consumer sees on their receipt.

The HIDDEN carbon taxes are in the cost of goods and services.
